Robots In South Korea To Teach English:South Korea does not have enough certified teachers of English to teach all their students. What they have, however, lots of robots. South Korea has launched a pilot program using robot Engkey to teach English.
According to CNN, South Korea has tested the effectiveness of R-learning using a robot Engkey teach English, and now plans to move them into 18 primary schools by the end of the year.
Senior Research Engineer Mun-Taek Choi said:
“The education system the robot does help to increase students’ interest and motivation in learning English and improve their English language skills.”
English teaching robots, or Engkeys, under the control of English language teachers in other parts of the world. There is a screen that displays Engkey individual teachers.
Tucker Balch, associate professor of interactive computing at Georgia Institute of Technology, said:
“This type of technology can bring many types of education which would otherwise be unavailable in more classes. It may be better to have a TelePresence robot from highly qualified teachers than just the average teacher in the classroom.”
