dating in the dark

I just spent an hour watching the series premiere of Dating in the Dark on ABC.  I have to give this dating experiment show two thumbs up.  It was truly an amazing look on how outward appearance has an effect on our dating world.

There were three girls; Christina a Marketing Manager, Lani a Nanny, and Melanie a Color Design Consultant.  There were three boys; Stephen a SAT Tutor, Seth an Audio Visual Designer, and Allister a DJ.  They all lived in a home for 4 days.  The house was blocked off so the guys could not see the girls and the girls could not see the guys.

Over the course of three days they would get to know each other in a room that was completely void of all light.  On day one they arrived and all got to go on a group date in the “Dark Room”.  Here they talked and got their first taste of what everyone was like.  In this setting they were able to carry on conversations and start to formulate an assumption of what the others were like and possibly what they looked like.

Next the host Rossi asked the men to give him the shirt off their backs, literally.  They did and the women were asked to do the same.  Rossi switched the shirts with each opposite sex and told them nothing of who the shirts belonged to.  Everyone then looked over the style, size, and smell of the shirt to get an idea of who they would be interested in.  Once everyone picked a shirt they were told who the shirt belonged to.  Then everyone was asked to invite someone to a date.

The next experiment was to tell them who was, according to the experts, their ideal mate.  Allister was partnered with Melanie, Seth with Christina, and Lani with Stephen.  Over the next three days the couples would be able to date the partner chosen for them and also go on random dates.

The random dates didn’t go over very well so everyone chose to stay with the one that was chosen for them.  In the dark all three couples found chemistry and a connection.  But what would happen in the light?  That is truly the question in this experiment.  How much do people put into looks when choosing a mate.

Next Rossi asked everyone to describe what they thought their partner looked like to a sketch artist.  Once these were completed they were given to their partner.  Interestingly the men were very close in their description of the women they chose.  The women were not.  This of course made the men apprehensive about the revealing.  The women were nervous also but it didn’t seem as much.

When all was revealed the couple was brought back up to the “Dark Room”.  A light would only reveal one person.  The other half of the couple would remain in the dark.  This was so their partner could not see their reaction.  Oh they couldn’t speak either.

Lani and Christina were not impressed with their date but Melanie was completely happy.  On the other side, Seth and Stephen were ecstatic about their dates (Lani and Christina) and Allister was not so happy about Melanie.  They were all allowed some time to decide if they wanted to meet their dates again after they finally got to “see” each other.

Stephen waited patiently for Lani, who despite her disappointment in looks, (he looked to much like a good guy) joined him on the balcony.  Seth waited anxiously for Christina.  But all he saw was her walking away from the house without a back wards glance.  Looks meant more to her than what she thought.  Melanie sat nervously on the balcony waiting for her hottie to arrive.  He did and they drove off into the sunset together.

This is a show that has made my favorite list and I will continue to watch.  I hope you liked my review and decide to check this new experiment in the dating world out for yourself.  This is your friendly Sex and Dating Examiner Jami keeping you up to date on all the happenings in today’s dating world.  Have a great day!
