Koch Brothers
Koch Brothers:Chances are you’ve never heard of Charles and David Koch. The brothers own Koch Industries, Kansas conglomerate, which operates refineries in several states, and the company behind brands including Brawny paper towels, Dixie cups, Georgia-Pacific lumber, Lycra and Stainmaster carpet fibers. Forbes ranks of Koch Industries as the second largest private company in the U.S. – and the Koch brothers themselves? They are worth billions.
And in the last 30 years, they sent more than $ 100 million in dozens of political organizations, many of whom are trying to bring the country on a more libertarian direction. Among the organizations that they are supported by the Cato Institute in Washington think tank that has recently raised questions about climate change, and the Mercatus Center at George Mason University in Virginia – what one Democratic strategist, called the “epicenter of the deregulation policy in Washington.”
The brothers have created a few neutral sounding groups like People for a stable economy – which set the events for the media to speak out against the proposed BTU tax President Clinton on energy issues – and Citizens for the Environment, which calls for many environmental problems including acid rain, “myths.”
David Koch founded the group Americans for Prosperity Foundation, which was connected with the Tea Party – training hundreds of activists in Texas and hosting an abstract for Tea Party activists on the site.
Jane Mayer, staff writer in The New Yorker, profiles the brothers and their political connections in the August 30 number of the magazine. Her article “covert operations” describes how the brothers of political interests, “consistent with [their] corporate interests.”
In the fresh air on Thursday, Maier joins Terry Gross to talk about the Kochs’ efforts in financing, in particular, that it describes as their broad and vigorous campaigns for the production of grass-roots political opinion. As she notes in the article, “the brothers financed the opposition campaign against so many policies of the Obama administration – from health care reform in the economic stimulus program – which in political circles, their ideological network called Kochtopus”. (Koch industry has responded to recent media coverage and online discussions with the set of “Koch Facts” published on his website.)
Prior to joining The New Yorker, Mayer has become the first female White House correspondent of The Wall Street Journal. It is also the author of bestselling 2008 book The Dark Side: Inside story of how the war on terror into a war on American ideals.
